Reduced aircraft noise was a big win for community

For several years, I have been fighting to preserve the lifestyle that we enjoy in our area of the Gold Coast; as our population grows, it is imperative to be on the front foot and to not be taken advantage of by large corporations and others with vested interests.

In 2015, as a co-founder of the Gold Coast Lifestyle Association, I found myself at the forefront of a significant community issue – heightened aircraft noise over Mermaid Beach and the southern suburbs, due to an Instrument Landing System (ILS) that was about to be installed at Gold Coast Airport. Little did we know that our journey would unfold into a five-year-long battle, culminating in a triumphant win in 2019, marking a pivotal moment for our community.

Our efforts commenced around a modest kitchen table, where concerned citizens, including myself as part of the Gold Coast Lifestyle Association, gathered to address the imminent issue of excessive aircraft noise that was about to affect our homes. Recognising the urgent need for action, we launched an extensive campaign, engaging the community through town hall meetings and grassroots initiatives. The objective was clear: to raise awareness about the adverse impact of the new ILS flight path and seek a resolution prioritising the well-being of our residents.

Throughout the years, fundraising played a crucial role in securing legal representation for our case in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT). The AAT became the battleground where we successfully challenged and restricted unnecessary aircraft movements over our neighbourhoods. In 2019, our persistent efforts bore fruit, as the tribunal ruled in our favour, leading to a significant reduction in the use of the ILS flight path.

The outcome meant that aircraft would now be restricted to flying over our homes during poor weather conditions, emergencies, or operational requirements, rather than on a daily basis as initially planned by the airport.

Out of this collective effort, a community group called “Stop the ILS,” now known as “Stop Flightpath Impacts,” emerged. Today, I am proud to be a co-founder of this group, which plays a vital role in shaping the airport’s noise abatement policy. Now with a permanent seat at the table, as part of the AAT restrictions, the group ensures ongoing commitment to the community’s enjoyment of amenities and a lifestyle free from unnecessary aircraft noise and disruption.

This success story serves as a testament to the strength of community advocacy and the positive impact it can have on preserving the quality of life for residents. It stands as an inspiration for other communities facing similar challenges, demonstrating that with determination and collaboration, positive change is not only possible but achievable.

On 16 March, I ask for your vote so that I can have a seat at the City of Gold Coast Council’s table, where I can continue to be a strong voice for our community.
